Opened in 1996 in Kusatsu, Shiga Prefecture, the Lake Biwa Museum is a public aquarium and prefectural museum designed by Nikken Sekkei that explores the relationship between lakes and people through exhibits on the natural history and culture of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest and oldest lake. The museum houses one of Japan's largest freshwater aquariums, featuring the giant Lake Biwa catfish (*Silurus biwaensis*) as an emblematic species. Among its notable displays is a full-scale replica of the *maruko-bune*, a traditional wooden sailing boat once used on the lake. Accredited as a Registered Museum under Japan's Museum Act and affiliated with the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the institution combines scientific and cultural documentation with public education.
