Lancaster Castle is a medieval castle and former prison in Lancaster, England, most likely founded in 1092-4 on the site of a Roman fort overlooking a crossing of the River Lune. It was first used as a prison in 1196, a role that grew in importance during the English Civil War. Owned by the British sovereign as Duke of Lancaster, it is a Grade I listed building; part of it still hosts sittings of the Crown Court, and the prison it housed, HM Prison Lancaster, closed in 2011.
