The Evangelical parish church of Landow, located in the village of Dreschvitz on the German island of Rügen, is a Brick Gothic structure with roots reaching back to around 1312, when it was constructed as a Wegekirche—a church type designed to orient priest and congregation symbolically toward Christ, as if on a spiritual journey. Dendrochronological analysis of its oak timber-framing in 2004 revealed it to be among the oldest churches on Rügen and possibly the oldest timber-framed church building in North Germany and the southeast Baltic region. Originally timber-framed, the structure was bricked in around 1542. The interior received baroque embellishment in the eighteenth century, with the altar, font, pulpit, and painted wooden ceiling all crafted by Elias Kessler, Pomerania's most celebrated baroque sculptor from Stralsund. A crypt chapel was later added to the vestry for the church's patron family. After decades of neglect through the GDR period, the building was assessed as dangerously unstable in 1982, but is now sustained by a preservation society that facilitates its continued use for community events.
