The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a freestanding bell tower (campanile) of Pisa Cathedral in Pisa, Italy. Begun in 1173 and attributed to Bonanno Pisano and Diotisalvi, it is built of marble and stone in the Romanesque style. Its lean stems from soft ground that could not support its weight, and the tilt worsened as construction continued into the 14th century. Remedial work between 1993 and 2001 reduced the lean to about 3.97 degrees. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
