Lincoln Castle stands in Lincoln, England, a motte-and-bailey castle begun in 1068 by William the Conqueror on the site of a pre-existing Roman fortress. It is one of only two castles in the country with two mottes, the other being at Lewes in East Sussex. It remained in use as a prison and court into modern times, and its Crown Courts continue to operate. Displayed within is one of only four surviving exemplars of the 1215 Magna Carta.
