The Locke Block, a four-story commercial building on Fifth Street in Devils Lake, North Dakota, was constructed in 1909 as a residential structure and represents the best surviving example of Chicago School architecture in the city. Built by Danish-born Valdemar Gram—a prominent local builder also responsible for the Devils Lake Carnegie Library and St. Joseph Catholic Church—the building was considered a "sky scraper" by contemporary standards due to its height relative to surrounding structures. Though Gram's name originally appeared in the building's date block, only "Locke" remains visible today. The structure featured an innovative roof drain system and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
