The Lubyanka Building, located on Lubyanka Square in Moscow's Meshchansky District, is a large Neo-Baroque structure of yellow brick that serves as the headquarters of the FSB. Designed by Alexander V. Ivanov in 1897, the building was significantly augmented by Aleksey Shchusev between 1940 and 1947, blending its original baroque revival style with Stalinist additions. Previously the national headquarters of the KGB, the building retains Soviet hammer-and-sickle emblems on its facade. Now a tentative cultural heritage site in Russia, the Lubyanka stands as an architectural landmark bearing witness to Russia's twentieth-century political history.
