On the University of Toronto St. George campus in Toronto stands the Macdonald-Mowat House, an Italianate and Second Empire style building constructed in 1872. The structure exemplifies the architectural preferences of its era, combining the classical proportions and decorative details of Italianate design with the mansard roofs and ornamental features characteristic of the Second Empire style popular in mid-nineteenth-century North America.
