The main building of the University of Tartu stands in Tartu, Estonia, and is one of the most notable examples of classical architecture in the country. Designed by Johann Wilhelm Krause, it was built between 1804 and 1809 as the main building of the Imperial University of Dorpat. It has been restored many times, including after a fire in 1965 and most recently in 2007, and it contains a large auditorium and attic lock-up rooms once used to detain students as punishment.
