Mainz Cathedral, also called St. Martin's Cathedral, stands near the historic centre and pedestrianised market square of Mainz, Germany. It is a Roman Catholic cathedral and the seat of the Bishop of Mainz, predominantly Romanesque in style, with later exterior additions from many centuries. Its three aisles honour Saint Martin of Tours, and its eastern quire is dedicated to Saint Stephen. Archbishop Willigis ordered its construction in 975–976 in the pre-Romanesque Ottonian style, as part of his vision of Mainz as a "second Rome."
