Matthias Church, formally the Church of the Assumption of the Buda Castle, is a Catholic church in Holy Trinity Square in Budapest's Castle District, in front of the Fisherman's Bastion. Tradition holds that a Romanesque church stood on the site in 1015, but the present building is a florid late Gothic structure from the second half of the 14th century, extensively restored in the late 19th century by Frigyes Schulek. Franz Joseph I and Charles IV, the last two Kings of Hungary, were crowned within its walls.
