Melrose Abbey, also known as St Mary's Abbey, is a partly ruined Cistercian monastery in Melrose, Roxburghshire, in the Scottish Borders. King David I of Scotland requested its foundation by Cistercian monks in 1136, and it remained the chief house of the order in Scotland until the Reformation. Built in the Gothic manner in the form of a St John's Cross, it is noted for carved details including saints, dragons, gargoyles and plants. Alexander II and other Scottish kings and nobles are buried there. Historic Environment Scotland maintains it as a scheduled monument.
