Messina Cathedral, formally the Basilica Cathedrale metropolitana di Santa Maria Assunta, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Messina, Sicily, and a minor basilica since June 1947. Built by the Normans and consecrated in 1197, it was largely rebuilt in the twentieth century after the 1908 earthquake and wartime bombing, which left only its perimeter walls, Gothic portal and an apse standing. Its tower houses the Messina astronomical clock, the largest astronomical clock in the world.
