The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption stands on the northern side of the Plaza de la Constitución (Zócalo) in Mexico City's historic center, atop the former Aztec sacred precinct near the Templo Mayor. Built in sections from 1573 to 1813 around an original church erected soon after the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlan, it was planned by Claudio de Arciniega, who drew on Spanish Gothic cathedrals. Its long construction produced a blend of Gothic, Baroque, Churrigueresque and Neoclassical elements.
