Middleham Castle is a ruined castle in Middleham, Wensleydale, North Yorkshire, England. Robert Fitzrandolph, 3rd Lord of Middleham and Spennithorne, began building it in 1190 to defend the road from Richmond to Skipton. It was the childhood home of King Richard III, though he spent little of his reign there. After his death it remained in royal hands until it was allowed to fall into ruin in the 17th century, and many of its stones were reused in buildings across the village.
