Mikulov Castle stands in the town of Mikulov in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic, occupying a site of historic Slavonic settlement where a stone castle was first erected at the end of the 13th century. The structure was later developed in the baroque architectural style. At the end of World War II, the castle was severely damaged by fire of unclear origin. During the war, the anthropological collection from the Moravské zemské muzeum had been housed there for protection, but much of its contents—including significant discoveries from Předmostí u Přerova, Dolní Věstonice, and the Mladeč caves—were destroyed in the blaze. Today it is recognized as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
