Mission San Juan Capistrano is a Franciscan mission station on the eastern bank of the San Antonio River in present-day San Antonio, Texas. Founded in 1731 by Spanish Catholic Franciscans, it was named for Saint John of Capistrano, a 15th-century theologian and warrior priest from the Abruzzo region of Italy. It was first christened in 1716 as La Misión San José de los Nazonis and forms part of a chain of Spanish missions that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
