The Monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla are two religious houses in the village of San Millán de la Cogolla in La Rioja, Spain, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1997. The older, San Millán de Suso, dates from the 6th century and is believed to stand on the site of a hermitage where Saint Emilian lived. Phrases in Spanish and Basque were first written there, in the Glosas Emilianenses, which UNESCO recognises as the birthplace of the modern written and spoken Spanish language.
