Monemvasia is a town and municipality in Laconia, Greece, built on a tied island off the east coast of the Peloponnese and linked to the mainland by a 400-metre sandy tombolo. Founded in the sixth century, it is among the oldest continually inhabited fortified towns in Europe. Its walls and many Byzantine churches survive from its time as one of the most important commercial centres in the Eastern Mediterranean.
