Victor Brecheret's Monument to the Bandeiras, completed in 1954, is a monumental Art Deco granite sculpture sited at the entrance of Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo's Moema District. Commissioned by the São Paulo government in 1921, the work commemorates the bandeiras—17th-century expeditions into Brazil's interior—and the bandeirantes who undertook them. The sculpture's massive scale and prominent location in the Praça Armando de Salles Oliveira, opposite the Palácio 9 de Julho, have made it an iconic and readily recognizable feature of São Paulo's urban landscape. The work represents Brecheret's monumental ambition and is today protected as public heritage by Conpresp and CONDEPHAAT.
