The Monument to the Unknown Hero stands atop Mount Avala, south-east of Belgrade, Serbia. Designed by the sculptor Ivan Meštrović, it was built in 1934–1938 on the place where an unknown Serbian soldier from World War I was buried. It commemorates the Balkan Wars and World War I, and it resembles other tombs of the unknown soldier built by the Allies after the war. The Žrnov fortress previously stood on the same site.
