The Monumental Axis is the central avenue of Brasília, Brazil's modernist capital, stretching 8.5 kilometers from the Rodoferroviária de Brasília to the Praça dos Três Poderes. Created by Lúcio Costa as part of the Plano Piloto masterplan, the avenue begins at the National Congress building and connects with the Highway Axis at the Pilot Plan Bus Station. Its first section, the Ministries Esplanade, is lined with government ministry buildings, while the full avenue hosts numerous important government buildings, monuments, and memorials. Though popular legend claims it is the world's widest road, the Monumental Axis actually comprises two avenues with six lanes each, totaling twelve lanes. It does, however, hold a Guinness Record for possessing the world's widest median strip of a highway.
