La Muralla Roja, a postmodern apartment complex in Calpe, Spain, was designed by architect Ricardo Bofill and built between 1968 and 1973. The structure reinterprets North African casbah architecture in an avant-garde idiom, preserving traditional elements such as courtyards, staircases, and interconnecting bridges throughout the fifty-unit housing estate. The complex accommodates three apartment typologies—studios of roughly 60 square meters, two-bedroom units of 80 square meters, and three-bedroom apartments of approximately 120 square meters—all connected by the building's labyrinthine passages. Ground-level amenities include two commercial shops, a sauna, and a restaurant, while roof terraces feature solariums and a swimming pool reserved for residents. The bold design has established Muralla Roja among Bofill's most iconic works.
