Located on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto in Muranów, the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews is a postmodern structure designed by Finnish architects Rainer Mahlamäki and Ilmari Lahdelma following an international competition in 2009. Completed in 2013 at a cost of 320 million złoty, the museum features a minimalist exterior clad in glass fins and copper mesh, with a cavernous entrance hall symbolizing the fractured history of Polish Jews. The core exhibition, which opened in 2014 and spans over 4,000 square metres across eight galleries, presents a thousand-year narrative of Jewish life in Poland using multimedia installations and reconstructions, including a replica of the Gwoździec synagogue's ceiling. The exhibition won the European Museum of the Year Award in 2016 and is complemented by the Virtual Shtetl portal, an online resource documenting Jewish communities before and after the Holocaust.
