Established in 1968 in Tehran County, the National Botanical Garden of Iran is a 150-hectare Pahlavi-era garden designed as the nation's principal center for horticulture and plant taxonomy. The sprawling complex houses an extensive herbarium of Iranian plants (TARI) containing approximately 160,000 specimens, alongside curated collections of non-Iranian flora including Himalayan, American, Japanese, African, and Australian species. Beyond its systematic plant collections, the garden features an arboretum, six lakes, artificial hills evoking the Alborz and Zagros mountain ranges and the Himalayas, a rock garden, waterfall, wetland, desert plant areas, a salt lake and wadi, and a kilometer-long river. The grounds also include a fruit garden, picnic areas with pavilions, and a botanical library holding over 11,000 volumes, making it a comprehensive horticultural resource and public destination.
