The National Gallery is an art museum on Trafalgar Square in the City of Westminster, London, founded in 1824 when the British government bought 38 paintings from the heirs of John Julius Angerstein. Its present building, a Georgian design by William Wilkins, was begun in 1832 and opened in 1838. Only the Trafalgar Square façade remains essentially unchanged, as the building has been extended piecemeal since. It is a Grade I listed building.
