The National Museum of Immigration occupies the former Hotel de Inmigrantes in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a Beaux-Arts complex designed by Johannes Kronfuss and built between 1905 and 1911. Often compared to a citadel, it was erected to receive arriving immigrants and guard against communicable diseases after mass cholera outbreaks. Over its 42 years as a hotel, more than a million immigrants passed through it. It is now a national historic monument of Argentina and also houses the Contemporary Art Center of the National University of Tres de Febrero.
