The National Pantheon of the Heroes stands between Palma and Chile streets in downtown Asunción, Paraguay, and is a national monument and the state mausoleum. Designed by Italian architect Alejandro Ravizza with builder Giacomo Colombino, it was begun in 1863 under President Francisco Solano López as a chapel to the Assumption of Mary. It remained unfinished after the War of the Triple Alliance until its completion and inauguration as the national pantheon on October 12, 1936, after the Chaco War.
