The National Portrait Gallery is an art museum in the City of Westminster, London, devoted to portraits of historically important and famous British people. Opened in 1856, it was arguably the first national public gallery in the world dedicated to portraits. Since 1896 it has occupied its current site at St Martin's Place, off Trafalgar Square, adjoining the National Gallery. The Renaissance Revival building was designed by Richard Allison and Ewan Christian and is Grade I listed.
