The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, commonly called the New Cathedral of Cuenca, stands in front of Parque Calderón in Cuenca, Ecuador. Its plan was drawn up by Juan Bautista Stiehle, a German-born friar, and construction began in 1885 and lasted almost a century. Romanesque Revival predominates among several styles combined, and its three domes are covered in blue and white glazed tile from Czechoslovakia. Its towers were left truncated because of an architect's calculation error, yet the domes' skyline has become a symbol of the city.
