The New Cemetery in Igualada, near Barcelona, is a boldly poetic work of brutalist and modern architecture designed by Enric Miralles and Carme Pinós following their 1984 competition win. Built between 1985 and 1994 as a replacement for the town's older burial ground, the cemetery has earned recognition as one of the most significant works of twentieth-century Catalan architecture. Miralles himself is buried within one of its tombs; he died in 2000. The site holds the status of Cultural Asset of National Interest.
