Located at 542 Main Street in New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York, the New Rochelle Trust Company Building is a Richardsonian Romanesque structure designed by architect F. C. Merry. The building's complex history spans two construction phases: the original two-story brownstone section dates from the 1880s and features curvilinear foliated Sullivanesque ornament across four bays, while a 1908 remodeling added two additional office stories in buff-colored brick and created a new entrance bay, resulting in a three-bay upper facade capped by a cornice and parapet gable with shallow pediment. Built to house the New Rochelle Trust Company, which relocated to this site in 1893 after beginning as the Bank of New Rochelle in 1888, it was the only public banking facility in the area at its opening. Though architecture critic Montgomery Schuyler dismissed it in 1909 as a "spoiled piece of architecture," contemporaries praised its fireproof construction and quality materials including marble, bronze, and Roman brick. In 2008, the building received recognition as part of the New Rochelle Business Improvement District's prestigious Excellence in Historic Preservation Award.
