Newcastle Castle stands in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, on the site of a Roman fort called Pons Aelius that guarded a bridge over the River Tyne. Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror, built a wooden motte-and-bailey castle there in 1080. Henry II later replaced it with the stone Castle Keep, built between 1172 and 1177, and Henry III added the Black Gate between 1247 and 1250. The keep is Grade I listed and a scheduled monument.
