The Nimrod Fortress, also called Nimrod Castle, stands on a ridge about 800 m above sea level on the southern slopes of Mount Hermon, overlooking the Golan Heights in Syria. Built by the Ayyubids and greatly enlarged by the Mamluks, it guarded a major access route to Damascus against armies approaching from the west. Its Arabic name, Qal'at al-Subeiba, means "Castle of the Large Cliff," and its association with the biblical hunter Nimrod came from the Druze, who settled the area in the 19th century. The area has been under Israeli occupation and administration since 1967, though the international community regards it as Syrian territory.
