Nottingham Castle stands on Castle Rock, a promontory dominating the city of Nottingham, England. Begun as a Norman fortress in the late 1060s, it became an important royal stronghold through the medieval period. After the English Civil War most of the original castle was demolished, leaving the gatehouse and parts of the ramparts. A ducal mansion begun in the 1670s was later converted into an art gallery and museum. The site is a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument.
