The Old Custom House in Monterey, California, is a Mediterranean Revival building designed by Thomas O. Larkin. Mexican authorities built it in 1827, when Monterey was the capital of Alta California, making it the oldest surviving government building in the state. It was the first designated California Historical Landmark and is also a National Historic Landmark. In 1846, U.S. Commodore John Drake Sloat raised the American flag there and declared California part of the United States.
