Old Parliament House stands in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, facing Lake Burley Griffin in front of the present Parliament House and in line with the Australian War Memorial. Designed by John Smith Murdoch and a team from the Department of Works and Railways, it was the seat of the Parliament of Australia from 1927 to 1988, intended only as a "provisional" building. Its Simplified or "Stripped" Classical style omits columns, entablatures and pediments but keeps the orderliness and symmetry of neoclassical architecture. Since 2009 it has housed the Museum of Australian Democracy.
