Old Sarum is the ruined, deserted site of Salisbury's earliest settlement, on a hill about two miles north of the modern city near the A345 road in Wiltshire. Prehistoric activity there dates from around 3000 BC, and an Iron Age hillfort followed around 400 BC. The Normans built a motte and bailey castle, a stone curtain wall and a cathedral, but the community moved to New Salisbury in the early 13th century, and the site is now an English Heritage property open to the public.
