Old St. Peter's Basilica stood on the site of present-day St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City from the 4th to 16th centuries, serving as one of Christianity's most important monuments before its demolition in 1505. Built in ancient Roman architectural style, construction began during the reign of Constantine I around 320, erected over the historical grounds of Nero's Circus. The basilica's name distinguishes it from the current St. Peter's Basilica, which replaced it during the Renaissance.
