Old State Capitol
Kentucky, United States
Exterior only
Visible from the street; the inside is private.
The Old State Capitol stands in Frankfort, Kentucky, and housed the Kentucky General Assembly from 1830 to 1910, before the current state capitol was built. Designed in the Greek Revival style by Gideon Shryock, then a twenty-five-year-old Lexington architect, it was his first building. Its front was meant to duplicate the Temple of Minerva Polias at Priene, and it has no windows, as Greek temples had none. A domed lantern above the self-supporting stone stairway brings in sunlight. It has been a museum and the home of the Kentucky Historical Society since 1920, and it is a U.S. National Historic Landmark.
