Orford Castle stands in Orford, Suffolk, about 12 miles northeast of Ipswich, with views over Orford Ness. Built between 1165 and 1173 by Henry II of England to consolidate royal power in the region, it is a Grade I listed building known for its well-preserved keep, which historian R. Allen Brown called "one of the most remarkable keeps in England." Constructed of London clay and Caen stone, the keep is of a unique design and may have been based on Byzantine architecture.
