Paimio Sanatorium, a tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Southwest Finland, was designed by Alvar Aalto following his competition victory in 1929 and completed in 1933. A landmark of modernist functionalism, the building earned critical acclaim across Finland and internationally upon completion. Originally built to serve tuberculosis patients exclusively, it operated in that capacity until the early 1960s, when it was converted into a general hospital. Today owned by Turku University Hospital, the sanatorium ceased hospital operations and has functioned as a private rehabilitation centre for children since 2014. The building holds protected status on Finland's Built Heritage Register and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2026 as part of the broader recognition of Aalto's works.
