The Palace of Ajuda is a neoclassical palace in the civil parish of Ajuda in Lisbon, Portugal, and is a National Monument of Portugal. It stands on the site of a temporary wooden building erected to house the royal family after the 1755 earthquake and tsunami. Begun by Manuel Caetano de Sousa, who planned a late Baroque-Rococo design, it was later taken over by José da Costa e Silva and Francisco Xavier Fabri, who favoured Neoclassicism. Construction, which began in 1796, was repeatedly halted by financial and political problems.
