The Palace of the Republic was a modern building in Berlin's Mitte district, across Unter den Linden from Museum Island on the site of the former Berlin Palace. Completed in 1976, it housed the Volkskammer, East Germany's supreme state organ of power, and also held theatres, a cinema, restaurants and a bowling alley. Closed after German reunification because of asbestos, it was demolished between 2006 and 2008.
