The Palace of Westminster, in the City of Westminster, London, is the meeting place of the Parliament of the United Kingdom and houses the House of Commons and House of Lords. After an 1834 fire destroyed most of the building, Charles Barry won the competition to replace it with a Gothic Revival design, and Augustus Pugin was also involved. Built from 1840 over thirty years, it incorporates the eleventh-century Westminster Hall, which survived the fire.
