Palacio Quemado, the Bolivian Palace of Government, stands on Plaza Murillo in downtown La Paz, beside the cathedral and across from the legislature. Designed by José María Núñez del Prado and begun in 1853, it blends eclectic and Neoclassical architecture and is a national monument of Bolivia. Its nickname, "Burnt Palace," comes from an 1875 uprising that set it nearly ablaze. It served as the presidential residence from 1853 to 2018, and it now operates as a museum.
