The Palais des Papes in Avignon, southern France, is one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. Once a fortress and palace, it served as the papal residence and a seat of Western Christianity during the 14th century, when six papal conclaves were held within it. It was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 for its architecture and its importance to the papacy.
