Pfalzgrafenstein Castle is a toll castle on Falkenau island in the Rhine, beside the town of Kaub, Germany. King Ludwig IV the Bavarian established it in 1326/27 to collect river tolls from passing traffic. It withstood a 39-day siege in 1504 and was occupied by Spanish forces for eleven years from 1620 during the Thirty Years' War. Toll collection ended in 1867, and the castle is now preserved as a public museum.
