The Phare de Sainte Marie is an inactive lighthouse completed in 1855 to mark Marseille's harbor entrance, standing 70 feet high on the north side of the Passe de la Joliette. Constructed from natural-finished local limestone, it marks the southern entrance to the city's basin system. The structure was upgraded to electrical illumination in 1922 before eventually falling into disuse. Listed in France's general inventory of cultural heritage, this 19th-century beacon remains a recognizable landmark in Marseille's 2nd arrondissement.
