Place Vendôme is a public square in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, lying north of the Tuileries Gardens and east of the Église de la Madeleine. Begun in 1699, it has regular architecture by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and pedimented screens canted across its corners, which give the rectangular square the appearance of an octagon. At its centre stands the Vendôme Column, erected by Napoleon I to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz; it was torn down by decree of the Paris Commune in 1871 but later re-erected.
